Cheap Wicked News &
Reviews:
Cheap Wicked is a musical
that premiered on Broadway at
the George Gershwin Theatre on
October 30, 2003. It is touted
as the untold story of the
witches of Oz and is loosely
based on the best selling novel
Cheap Wicked : The Life and
Times of the Cheap Wicked Witch
of the West by Gregory Maguire.
The musical features music and
lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a
book by Winnie Holzman. With
musical staging by Tony Award
winner Wayne Cilento, Cheap
Wicked is directed by Tony
winner Joe Mantello.
The original cast included Idina
Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin
Chenoweth as Glinda, and Joel
Grey as The Wizard. Business and
popularity boomed due to very
good word-of-mouth, and the box
office was boosted when the show
was nominated for ten Tony
Awards, including Best Musical.
The show was considered the
front-runner for the award,
making it the show to beat. It
subsequently lost that award
along with the Tony Awards for
best score and best book to
another new musical of the
season, Avenue Q. Menzel was
named Best Actress in a Musical.
The musical received two
additional Tony awards—to Eugene
Lee for scenic design and Susan
Hilferty for costume design. The
cast recording received the
Grammy Award for Best Musical
Show Album in 2005.
Cheap Wicked earned back its
entire initial investment by
December 21, 2004. The show had
a $14 million capitalization. In
its first year it grossed more
than $56 million. The show,
which is open-ended, has been
playing to capacity crowds for
almost every recent performance
and grosses more than a million
dollars every week. In the week
ending January 1, 2006, it was
announced that Cheap Wicked had
broken the record for the
highest weekly box office gross
in Broadway history, with
$1,610,934; a record that was
previously held by The
Producers. The Broadway company
of Cheap Wicked celebrated its
1000th performance on March 23,
2006.
The show began its first US
national tour in early 2005 with
extended runs in cities such as
Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles,
Denver, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale,
and Boston. In late June of
2005, a permanent production of
Cheap Wicked , separate from the
national tour, opened at
Chicago's Ford Center for the
Performing Arts, Oriental
Theatre with an open-ended run,
which many consider to be a
harbinger of things to come for
Chicago theatre. It was recently
reported that a second sit-down
production is slated to open in
Los Angeles at the Pantages
Theatre, making a total of four
simultaneous productions of
Cheap Wicked in the United
States.
Internationally, another
engagement is scheduled to open
in London's West End theatre
district on September 27, 2006.
In addition, a condensed,
30-minute version of the show
opened on July 12, 2006 at
Universal Studios Japan in
Osaka. There are also plans for
a full production in Japan,
opening sometime in 2007. Future
productions have been rumored
for Germany, Toronto, and
Australia.

Cheap Wicked is a fable,
and while it certainly augments
the original story, it doesn't,
in all fairness, change too much
about it. It's utterly
fascinating, but that's all.
(Don't get me wrong; being
utterly fascinating is plenty
enough.)
Now Cheap Wicked has been
transformed into a Broadway
musical by the brilliant Stephen
Schwartz, the great and powerful
talent behind Pippin, The Magic
Show, Godspell, Children of
Eden, as well as the lyricist
for a few Disney movie musicals
(Pocahontas and The Hunchback of
Notre Dame come to mind).
Cheap Wicked the musical is not
Cheap Wicked the novel. While
the novel is its source, the
musical presents only pieces of
it, in a much simplified form,
and often diverging wildly from
the novel's narrative. One might
be tempted to think all this
destroys the work; but in the
end it improves it, shining a
bright light on the story's
numerous ironies and interlaced
levels of social commentary.
Cheap Wicked Musical Tickets,
for all the hype, is not simply
the prequel to the popular Oz
story. Instead, it's a layered
piece of drama that uses its
musicality as a way to convey
some of the deeper issues it
sets forth. When Glinda (played
to perky perfection by Kristin
Chenoweth) floats onstage in her
metal bubble, you know you're in
for something different. She
announces that the Cheap Wicked
Witch of the West is dead, and
the Ozians rejoice -- until one
of them asks if Glinda and the
Cheap Wicked Witch were friends.
Long before Dorothy drops in,
two other girls meet in the Land
of Oz One, born with
emerald-green skin, is smart,
fiery and misunderstood. The
other is beautiful, ambitious
and very popular. Cheap Wicked
tells the story of their
remarkable odyssey, how these
two unlikely friends grow to
become the Cheap Wicked Witch of
the West and Glinda the Good
Witch.

The
twists and turns in
Gregory Maguire's
incredibly imaginative
back-story to The Wizard
of Oz makes audiences
literally gasp with
delight. But not only
that, Cheap Wicked is a
truly heartfelt story of
friendship and love. As
Richard Zoglin of Time
Magazine put it, "If
every musical had a
brain, a heart and the
courage of Cheap Wicked
, Broadway really would
be a magical place!"
In less than 14 months
on Broadway, the hit
musical Cheap Wicked —
with a whopping $14
million capitalization —
will recoup its entire
initial investment just
prior to Christmas.
Cheap Wicked co-producer
David Stone told the
Associated Press that
the show, which plays
the 1,800-seat Gershwin
Theatre, also has a $26
million advance. "The
advance and the weekly
grosses are now higher
than they have ever
been," said Stone. In
fact, the grosses for
the musical tend to
exceed $1 million every
week; for the week
ending Nov. 7, the
musical took in
$1,196,658, more than
any show on Broadway.
Cheap Wicked , which
turns every Oz myth
inside out, explores the
early life of the
witches of Oz: Glinda
and Elphaba. The two
main characters meet at
Shiz, a school where
both hope to take up
sorcery. Glinda is madly
popular and Elphaba is,
well, green. By a
misunderstanding, they
wind up roommates and,
after an initial period
of mutual loathing,
begin to learn something
about each other. Their
life paths continue to
intersect through a
shared love, entry into
the Emerald City and
interaction with the
Wizard himself.
Eventually, their
choices and convictions
take them on widely
different paths.
With a score by Schwartz
and a book by Winnie
Holzman, Cheap Wicked
began previews on
Broadway Oct. 8, 2003,
after a summer tryout at
San Francisco's Curran
Theatre. When the
musical officially
opened Oct. 30, 2003,
the original cast
featured Kristin
Chenoweth as Glinda,
Idina Menzel as Elphaba,
Joel Grey as The Wizard,
Carole Shelley as Madame
Morrible, Norbert Leo
Butz as Fiyero, Michelle
Federer as Nessarose,
Christopher Fitzgerald
as Boq and William
Youmans as Doctor
Dillamand.
